Darmanitan: to zen or not to zen
Ok so Im brand new to pokemon, or at least I started playing with pokemon black as my first poke game. I really like the darmanitan, but the one I have been leveling does not have the zen mode feature. Which one is the better darmanitan for poke battles?

You can get Darmanitan Pre-E4 as well, during winter if you go to icirrus city and talk to that team rocket guy's wife. she gives you a ragecandybar.

Yeah, Zen is only cool to just see and such. I'd go with Sheer Force, my buddy's Darmanitan is a beast with that

Zen mode is really bad because of the way its stats switch. with zen mode you have either: bad coverage, shitty damage once your hp drops below 50% or shitty damage when you HP is above 50%
It doesnt sound like you're at the point of caring about EVs yet, but when you get there, Zen Mode makes Darmantian even worse

Zen mode Darmanitan has a base special attack of 140, as it switches around his attack and special attack. You do not have to put all EVs into two stats, and it is indeed possible to use both physical and special moves on the same pokemon. Moves like substitute and belly drum make Zen Darmanitan make it an effective mixed attacker. Sheer force Darmanitan is better with purely physical moves, of course.

It all depends on your team and the strategy you're going for. With zen mode, you're probably going to want to run sub because it's the most reliable way to get down to 50%. Besides sub, you'll probably want to run with flamethrower, psychic, and either focus blast or energy ball depending on what types you're worried about most. Since you have a sheer force one (which I personally would prefer), you'll probably want to hit things as hard as you can with flare blitz and other physical attacks of your choice that preferably take advantage of sheer force.

Thanks for the advice, Im not certain on some terms like what an EV is :D but I do like the game am trying to learn. I am pretty happy most people favor the non zen version as thats the one Im fond of!
Hes lvl 41 with Belly rub, hammer arm, flare blitz and thrash so far and he quickly becoming my #1 pokemon. Reuniclus, Carracosta, and Excadrill are all a close 2nd!

Zen is actually quite bad, Darmanitan came out of left field actually. People expected Flareon V.2 with a fast, shallow movepool ultimately being a bad pokemon.
Instead, we got Sheer Force and a monstrous Attack stat.

You can't get zen until post-elite four, and the base stats are MADE for Sheer Force.

Actually, I believe you can. Correct me if I'm wrong, but though Prof Juniper explains to you about them only after E4, you can already give the item before. (I remember being able to do it; I just didn't capture because I didn't want to waste that item, since I didn't know how rare they were =p) Anyway, I'd go with Sheer Force as well.
